Transfer all of your old data from that old phone to a new Motorola with this intuitive little app

An Overview of Motorola Migrate

Motorola is still a pretty big player in the world of smartphones today, and millions of people end up purchasing one. However, one big issue most people find when switching their phones over is that their data is difficult to move to the new phone. This is where Motorola Migrate can really take the headache out of data migration if you’re moving to a Motorola brand phone.

This is a free app that’s directly from Motorola Mobility LLC, so it’s not some third-party application trying to steal your data. It works for Android but stopped at Marshmallow and hasn’t updated since 1.7.0.06, so it will work only with OS versions prior to that. If you have newer than Marshmallow, this app no longer works.

What Motorola Migrate Is and What It Does

In a nutshell, Motorola Migrate is a way to use their servers to transfer all your old data to a new phone. It works pretty simply. Your data will be uploaded through their servers and onto your new phone, so you won’t need to use any of your own space, like with a USB thumb drive. It works much like an FTP server for website transferring, only your data will be put on your new phone automatically.

Overall, over 50 million people have used this app, which goes to show just how popular Motorola still is. The app is also fairly simplistic and intuitive to use, so you don’t actually need any technical know-how to pull it off. The app instructions walk you through it.

Features of Motorola Migrate

One of the first features you’re going to notice with Motorola Migrate is the “Migrate Your Stuff” page, which allows you to copy all of your data from your old phone and then send it to Motorola’s servers. On your new phone, you will get to upload your stuff, including messages, photos, videos, contacts, music and more.

There’s even a feature with this app to restore all your stuff on your old phone. After all, just because you’re not using it anymore doesn’t mean it wouldn’t make a great backup for important data. So Motorola makes it easy to transfer everything to a new phone while keeping all your data on both phones. Other than the ability to transfer data, however, there aren’t many more features with this app. It’s basically a one-trick pony for migrating your data to a new phone.

Pros and Cons of Motorola Migrate

Pros

  • Works with Android up through Lollipop
  • Easy and intuitive features make it intuitive to transfer data
  • Can back up and restore all data that’s being transferred
  • A free app to use for Android users

Cons

  • Stopped working entirely with Marshmallow
  • Uploading data can be very slow

Attention Migrate Users:

Sorry, but we will be retiring Migrate starting on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. You may still use Migrate if you are on Android 2.2 Froyo through Android 5.1 Lollipop.

You may wish to choose another app as an alternative for your data transfers. While Motorola does not endorse or warranty third-party apps, some users have reported success using Copy My Data, Phone Copier, ShareIt, etc.

Potentially dangerous permissions

  • CAMERA: Required to be able to access the camera device.
  • GET_ACCOUNTS: Allows access to the list of accounts in the Accounts Service.
  • READ_CALL_LOG: Allows an application to read the user's call log.
  • READ_CONTACTS: Allows an application to read the user's contacts data.
  • READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE: Allows an application to read from external storage.
  • READ_PHONE_STATE: Allows read only access to phone state, including the phone number of the device, current cellular network information, the status of any ongoing calls, and a list of any PhoneAccounts registered on the device.
  • READ_SMS: Allows an application to read SMS messages.
  • WRITE_CALL_LOG: Allows an application to write (but not read) the user's call log data.
  • WRITE_CONTACTS: Allows an application to write the user's contacts data.
  • WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE: Allows an application to write to external storage.

Other permissions

  • ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE: Allows applications to access information about networks.
  • ACCESS_WIFI_STATE: Allows applications to access information about Wi-Fi networks.
  • BLUETOOTH: Allows applications to connect to paired bluetooth devices.
  • BLUETOOTH_ADMIN: Allows applications to discover and pair bluetooth devices.
  • CHANGE_NETWORK_STATE: Allows applications to change network connectivity state.
  • CHANGE_WIFI_STATE: Allows applications to change Wi-Fi connectivity state.
  • GET_TASKS: This constant was deprecated in API level 21. No longer enforced.
  • INTERNET: Allows applications to open network sockets.
  • NFC: Allows applications to perform I/O operations over NFC.
  • RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED: Allows an application to receive the ACTION_BOOT_COMPLETED that is broadcast after the system finishes booting. If you don't request this permission, you will not receive the broadcast at that time. Though holding this permission does not have any security implications, it can have a negative impact on the user experience by increasing the amount of time it takes the system to start and allowing applications to have themselves running without the user being aware of them. As such, you must explicitly declare your use of this facility to make that visible to the user.
  • WAKE_LOCK: Allows using PowerManager WakeLocks to keep processor from sleeping or screen from dimming.
  • WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS: Allows an application to read or write the secure system settings.
  • WRITE_SETTINGS: Allows an application to read or write the system settings.
  • android.permission.MANAGE_ACCOUNTS
  • android.permission.UPDATE_APP_OPS_STATS
  • android.permission.USE_CREDENTIALS
  • android.permission.WRITE_SMS
  • com.motorola.permission.ACCESS_CHECKIN
